In a time where modern bakeries open left and right, it’s refreshing to see old school one stand its ground. One is Ming Wah Bakery.
Ming Wah Bakery
Located in Mong Kok, Ming Wah Bakery has been baking traditional and nostalgic Cantonese pastries since the early 1980s. It’s so old school that it retained white tiles and has no English labels. In fact, ordering can be a challenge because none of the aunties can communicate in English.

Ming Wah bakes one of Hong Kong’s iconic pastries, the Bolo Bao (pineapple bun). It’s called pineapple bun not because it has pineapple in it but because its top crust resembles the fruit.
Look at those bolo baos!
Their version has a fluffy and sweet bun topped with a slightly sweet crust. Take note that this is not the Cha Chaan Teng (Hong Kong-style cafe) kind. Rather, I believe it’s the traditional, bakery kind.

Another bestseller is the Siu Beng (toasted glutinous rice cake). It’s soft and chewy like mochi, filled with either custard or red bean, and sprinkled with sesame seeds. It’s really like the Chinese-Filipino buchi, but not deep-fried.

They also sell Sausage Buns (not sure what is its Cantonese name). It’s fluffy and sweet, filled with deli-style-tasting sausage (I’m glad it’s not the canned Vienna sausage).
