Last week, I featured Chukfo Taipan Restaurant, which is an amazing Siu Mei (Cantonese roast meats) shop we visited on our recent Hong Kong trip (read my review here). But one visit to a roast meats shop isn’t enough. So we visited another one and this time it’s an historic one—Joy Hing Roasted Meat.
Joy Hing Roasted Meat
I say historic because Joy Hing has been around since the latter part of the Qing Dynasty (late 1800s). It was originally located in Guangdong province of China before it moved to Hong Kong in the early 1900s. It took a break during World War II but reopened again.
Joy Hing is still standing today, tucked in one of the streets of Wan Chai. Unlike Chukfo or other roast meats shop with fancier interior, its place is run down, giving authentic Hong Kong vibes.

The historic roast meat shop was given a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand recognition back in 2016.

Before I talk about the food, allow me to point out a stark difference of Joy Hing from many Hong Kong restaurants—the friendly staff. They are helpful and always smiling, something that is largely absent in Hong Kong hospitality. The staff is living up to their shop’s name!

So let’s talk about the food, starting with the Roast Goose Leg. It’s succulent but could be more tender. It’s also on the salty side but is easily counteracted by the sweet and fruity plum sauce.

Their White Cut Chicken is tasty, super tender, and has a smooth skin. It’s best eaten with the ginger, scallion oil, which adds saltiness.

Lately, I’ve been leaning towards steamed chicken. So I guess I’ll be eating more of it in my future visits to roast meat shops.
Of course, we tried their Char Siu (barbecued pork). It’s on the lean side, has little fat, and is rightly sweet.

Their Roast Pork is like lechon kawali (Filipino deep-fried pork belly) in a panciteria (Filipino-Chinese restaurant).

Joy Hing has a special sauce that you can pour into your roast meats to enhance its flavor. If I remember correctly, it’s sweet and savory.
The Joy Hing Sauce
Together with the affordability of its food (we paid less than HKD200 for our entire meal with a bottled water) and the friendliness of its staff, Joy Hing Roasted Meat is easily one of the best roast meat shops I’ve ever visited in Hong Kong. I highly recommend it to you!
