Eating in Hong Kong can be expensive. A decent meal in a popular food spot can easily cost HKD50-100 (roughly PHP390-780 or USD7-14) per person. But if you are a budget-conscious foodie, this shouldn’t ruin your Hong Kong food trip. Thankfully, there are plenty of cheap alternatives.

Such is the “this this rice” or “two-dish rice” shops across the city. It’s a nod to how customers order their food, which is by pointing to pre-cooked dishes, similar to the Filipino “turo-turo” (literally, “point point”). For less than HKD50, you can be filled with yummy Cantonese food.

Interestingly, these spots are common in the less affluent areas of Hong Kong. But more of these spots sprang up during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the government ban dining in after 6PM. Today, it’s being patronized by people from different social classes.

One “this this rice” spot that we tried is Dragon Hundred Flavors, which has branches in Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui. Here, you can buy dishes for as low as HKD20 (roughly PHP160/USD2.6)!

Aside from being fairly affordable, Dragon Hundred Flavors is also clean.

You can also dine in here. I like that there are warmers on the table (though we didn’t get to try it because we did takeaway, and we didn’t see others use it).

Here are the food we tried:

  • Black Pepper Beef (not sure of its name): It’s peppery and slightly sweet. The chunks of beef are tender except for a few pieces. I wish the potatoes are crisper.

  • Steamed Ribs with Black Beans: It’s tasty and tender, except for a few pieces.

  • Stir-Fried Chicken Fillet with Garlic-Flavoured Broccoli: This has tender pieces of tasty chicken thigh and crisp broccoli.

  • Stir-Fried Mixed Vegetables: The veggies are crisp and lightly seasoned.

  • Sweet and Sour Pork: The pork and veggies retain their crunch even though it’s doused in sauce. This is easily our favorite that we even ordered another one to be brought back to the Philippines!

Dragon Hundred Flavors can be your lifesaver if you’re food tripping on a budget. While I think the dishes aren’t the best versions, they are really good. I highly recommend it to you!

P.S. There are other “this this rice” spots that have cheaper meals. I hope to discover them in the future!
