Asam Pedas Pak Man: This Restaurant in Malacca (Malaysia) Specializes on My Favorite Malaccan Dish, Asam Pedas (Sour Spicy Soup)

Literally “sour spicy”, Asam Pedas is a Malay dish composed of a protein, commonly fish, and a fiery red broth made with chilies, tamarind, belacan (fermented shrimp paste), and other aromatics. According to Tony Boey of the Johor Kaki blog, the dish could’ve originated in either Malacca (Malaysia) or Central Sumatra (Indonesia). But given its ingredients, Boey believes it’s from Malacca.

I’ve tried asam pedas on my first visit to Malacca back in 2018. It made an impression on me that it ended up my favorite Malaccan dish. So for my recent visit, I researched where best to eat the dish. And thanks to Mark Wiens, I went to Asam Pedas Pak Man

Founded by Abdul Rahman Hassan a.k.a. Pak Man, Asam Pedas Pak Man is one of most popular asam pedas spots in Malacca. It may even be the most popular one, with almost seven thousand ratings in Google. No wonder they are exporting their asam pedas paste to other countries.

This establishment is so popular among content creators. So there’s a high chance that it’s good.

So how do I find their asam pedas? While it’s sour and spicy, it’s still flavorful. The okra gives crunch to the dish.

You can choose the fish that you want. I forgot what I got. LOL.

The asam pedas is perfect with rice (flood it with the broth!), salted egg, and bean sprouts.

The Kailan Goreng Ikan Masin (Chinese broccoli/kale with salted fish) has crisp veggies and an umami taste. The fried shallots add flavor as well.

If you want to make your own asam pedas at home, you can buy Pak Man’s asam pedas paste. In fact, they also sell other pastes, including for Biryani, Curries (beef or fish), and Rendang (coconut stew).

After eating asam pedas, you can head out in one of stalls outside selling Keria Gula Melaka or sweet potato doughnuts covered with palm sugar. It’s the perfect sweet ending to your meal!

Asam pedas is a Malaccan dish you shouldn’t miss when you visit Malacca. And a thirty minute drive from the heritage district to Asam Pedas Pak Man is worth it. I highly recommend it to you!
