First things first: What is Lok-lok? Literally “to dip”, this Malaysian food experience is like hotpot or steamboat except that the items are on skewers. We tried it in Penang (check it here, and my Penang Food Guide here), which is the food capital of Malaysia, and it’s one of the fun street food experiences we’ve had there.
But Johor Bahru (JB) brings lok-lok to another level by deep-frying the skewers. One spot that does it (and does it really well) is Fa Ge Lok Lok.
Established in 2008, Fa Ge Lok Lok is a popular food truck in JB. It’s so popular that it even expanded to Singapore in 2024.
You can choose from a variety of skewers. They have meats, processed food, seafood, and vegetables (yes, they deep-fry the veggies).
The ordering is simple. You just get your skewers and give it to the staff.
I have to say this: They masterfully deep-fry the food until it becomes crispy while still tender and juicy.
You can also dip the skewers in a sauce. My favorite is the sweet and tangy chili sauce.
While the skewers are generally delicious, there are a few standouts: Bacon-wrapped sausages, broccoli, intestines, pork belly, and wood-ear mushrooms.
Our friends got shrimp. Unfortunately, my wife and I are allergic to it.
The skewers are perfect with rice. Unfortunately, Fa Ge Lok Lok doesn’t offer it. So if you’re a rice-loving person like us, just head over the nearby food trucks.
By the way, each stick has a colored end, which corresponds to a price.
Lok lok, especially the deep-fried kind, is definitely a must-try street food experience in Malaysia. So when you’re in JB, don’t miss out on Fa Ge Lok Lok. They are masters of deep-fried skewers. Needless to say, it’s highly recommend it to you!
