Laksa is one of the most popular dishes in Malaysia and Singapore, probably next to Nasi Lemak (coconut rice) and Hainanese Chicken Rice, respectively. To the uninitiated, this is a noodle soup dish with regional varieties, with Curry Laksa (or laksa with coconut milk-based broth) being the most familiar (at least to tourists).

When my friends and I were in Johor Bahru (JB) earlier this year, I brought them to my favorite laksa place in the city—WW Laksa House.

WW (Water Works) Laksa House is an institution in JB. It was started in 1978 by the late Choo Ah Moi, a Singaporean who ran the business with her Johorean husband, Ang Keng Kue. Now, it’s being run by the next generations.

The hole-in-the-wall has a simple menu with only three noodle dishes: Laksa, Dry Mee, and Mee Soup. You can choose from six noodle options: Kway teow (flat rice noodles), mee hoon (rice vermicelli), thick mee hoon, rice pin noodles, wanton mee, and yellow mee

The laksa has a flavorful and stay-in-the-mouth spicy broth.

We chose mee hoon and yellow tee, so it has textures.

The beancurd absorbs the flavor and the blood cockles have a nice, clam-like taste. It’s still as good as when I first tried it!

If you like dry noodles, then go for the dry mee (duh!). It as springy noodles that’s covered in sweet and savory dark soya sauce-based sauce. It also comes with a soup on the side, which has plump wantons with thin wrapping.

The mee soup is just like chicken noodle soup. It’s simple and comforting!

We also tried the Otak Otak, a fish cake wrapped in leaves and typically grilled. But I think it’s an acquired taste. So for now, it’s not yet for me.

WW Laksa House is as good as I first visited. So they’re consistent and it’s probably the reason they lasted for almost half a century. So if you’re in JB, drop by WW Laksa House. I recommend it to you!
