Sha Zah Confectionery: A Takeaway Spot in Joo Chiat Road (Singapore) Selling Oversized Karipap (Curry Puffs)!

I once watched a vlog of the Bangkok-based full-time eater Mark Wiens being toured around by the Singaporean food expert and Makansutra co-founder, KF Seetoh. Seetoh brought Wiens to spots that invented Singaporean dishes. Their last stop was Sha Zah Confectionery.

Nestled along Joo Chiat Road, Sha Zah Confectionery is a takeaway spot selling karipap or curry puffs. It’s been around since 1997. It’s easy to find it, as it’s located across a mosque, Masjid Khalid. So I can just imagine the Muslim faithful grabbing a snack there after worship.

I thought the curry puffs will just be small, similar to the ones sold at curry puff stalls and the chain Old Chang Kee. But I was surprised how big the curry puffs are. They’re massive!

The Menu

The Potato Curry Puff has a super flaky crust and a filling with chunks of potatoes. It has a nice curry flavor with a kick of spice.

The Chicken Curry Puff has the same flaky crust and flavor profile.

But the real winner for me is the Beef Rendang Curry Puff. It has a generous filling of beef rendang, which is a Malay dish made with beef stewed in coconut and spices.

I can really taste the coconut flavors and spices. Don’t forget to put the sweet, spicy, and tangy chili sauce, because it will bring the curry puff into another level.

The Sauce

Sha Zah Confectionery makes simple yet tasty and filling curry puffs. If you’re in the area, make sure to drop by. I highly recommend it to you!
