Chin Mee Chin Confectionery: An Old School Kopitiam (Local Coffee Shop) in Singapore That’s Been Operating Since 1925

In a time where modern bakeries and cafes open left and right, it’s refreshing to see old school ones stand its ground. In Singapore, one such bakery is Chin Mee Chin Confectionery.

Established in 1925, Chin Mee Chin Confectionery is an old school bakery and kopitiam (local coffee shop) located in the Katong neighborhood. They offer toasts, savory and sweet pastries, and other breakfast staples.

Chin Mee Chin Confectionery is founded by Tan Hui Dong, who had been in the bread delivery service in the 1920s. In the 1950s, the Tan family bought the space where the kopitiam is located.

They also have an al fresco area:

In the 1970s, it added Eurasian confectioneries to its menu in response to a growing Eurasian community in the area.

Chin Mee Chin closed down in 2018. But in partnership with Lim Kian Chun of the Mission Group, it reopened and rebranded in 2021, targeting the next generation.

So let’s talk about food, starting with the Peanut Butter Toast Set, which comes with soft-boiled eggs and a drink. The toast is crisp and the butter and peanut butter make a sweet and salty combination.

Peanut Butter Toast Set. We asked for extra peanut butter and they took it extra seriously. LOL.

You can’t go wrong with Iced Kopi (local coffee) especially in the Singapore heat:

The Luncheon Meat Bun has a hefty slice of luncheon meat enveloped by a soft bun. I find this bread comforting.

The Chocolate Cupcake is moist. Just don’t expect high-end chocolate taste.

Sugee is a Eurasian butter cake made with semolina flour. Chin Mee Chin’s version is moist, with slivers of toasted almonds adding texture.

We brought home their Homemade Kaya (coconut custard jam). It’s creamy and has nice coconut custard flavor.

Chin Mee Chin Confectionery serves good breakfast sets and pastries. Eating there is like taking part in its 100 year old history, and will definitely bring nostalgia to local. I highly recommend it to you!
