Dining at Orchard Road, Singapore’s premier shopping district, can be intimidating, especially for our wallets. But if you know where to go, you can still fill your tummies with good food at relatively affordable prices. One place is Hawker’s Street at Tang Plaza.
Hawker’s Street is a chain of food courts that aims to bring famed hawkers together under one roof. Its latest outlet (as of the time of this writing) is at Tang Plaza.
What’s fascinating in its Tang Plaza outlet is that it brings together MICHELIN-recommended hawkers from different hawker centers across Singapore. So you know that the food will be good!
Here are some hawker stalls we tried:
Fei Fei Roasted Noodle
A MICHELIN Bib Gourmand awardee, Fei Fei Roasted Noodle is a famed hawker stall in Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre at Jurong East, a district in west Singapore. They specialize in roast meats.
Their meats are juicy and tender. The Roast Pork has a salty and crunchy skin, while the Char Siu (barbecue pork) is rightly sweet and perfectly caramelized.
We were supposed to order their Roast Duck. However, the cook refused to serve it because it’s no longer of good quality and may even cause stomach problems. So kudos to the Fei Fei team for their commitment to consumer safety!
Hup Hong Chicken Rice
Also with MICHELIN recognition, this chicken rice hawker is also from Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre (now I want to explore west Singapore!).
I tried both Steamed and Roasted Chicken, which are tender. The rice and soup are flavorful. And as expected, the add-on gizzard and liver are on the plain side but are easily remedied with the sauces.
Too bad I forgot to take a photo of the food. I guess I was super hungry! LOL.
Tai Wah Pork Noodle
Not to be confused with the MICHELIN-starred Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle (read my review here), Tai Wah Pork Noodle is a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand hawker that specializes in Bak Chor Mee or minced pork noodles.
I got the Signature Tai Wah Pork Noodle, which has al dente noodles topped with different pig parts (minced pork, slices of pork, and pig liver). It’s rightly sour due to the vinegar, and also stay-in-the-mouth spicy.
The dish comes with a bowl of soup on the side. It has tasty dumplings (which has a thin wrapper) and meatballs. It’s also very porky, even enhanced with deep-fried lard.
This is easily one of my favorite dishes in our recent Singapore trip! I can’t wait to visit it’s original branch in Hong Lim Market & Food Centre.
There are other stalls in Hawkers’ Street that we didn’t get to try. One is Springleaf Prata Place, which specializes in Roti Prata or Indian flatbread.
Our friend tried Hill Street Hainanese Curry Rice. He ordered a ton of good toppings, which are nice with its flavorful curry.
Other stalls include:
Auntie Jossie Traditional Rojak
Hill Street Coffee Shop
Hwa Heng Beef Noodle
Loong Kee Yong Tau Fu
Old Teochew Mee Siam Satay Bee Hoon
Ramen King
Tai Seng Fish Soup
Thai Dynasty
The Viet Roti Banh Mi & Coffee
TOP 1 Home Made Noodle
Anyway, Hawkers’ Street at Tang Plaza makes it convenient for foodies to try MICHELIN-recommended hawkers. The stalls are, in my opinion, way better than the ones we’ve tried in Food Republic, another chain of food courts in Singapore. So if you’re in Orchard Road, I highly recommend that you pay Hawkers’ Street a visit.
