New Silver Crown Panciteria, Inc.: This Restaurant in Caloocan City Serves Chinese-Filipino Food with Generous Portions at Affordable Prices!
To the uninitiated, a panciteria is a place that serves Filipino-Chinese dishes. These include chopsuey (stir-fried vegetables), the iconic lumpiang Shanghai (deep-fried spring rolls), and different kinds of pancit/pansit (stir-fried noodles; the word “panciteria” literally means “pancit place”), among many others. In this article, I’m featuring a panciteria in Caloocan City—New Silver Crown Panciteria.
I’ve tried researching for the history of New Silver Crown Panciteria. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lack of reliable resources in the Internet (I hope someone will document its history). But one thing its patrons know and I myself can attest: They serve generous portions at affordable prices!
It’s easy to miss the panciteria if you’re not paying attention because they have no signages outside. But once you find it, you’ll be in for a treat!
Stepping inside is like entering a hole-in-the-wall in Manila Chinatown.
Since the dishes are reasonably priced, we ordered quite a number of dishes. We started with Hototay Soup, a soup dish with a medley of proteins and vegetables.
Their version is tasty and rightly seasoned compared to others that are on the bland side. Its veggies are crisp, and I like the flavor of celery.
We also ordered their Tokwa Lechon (sometimes called Tokwa con Lechon) or lechon kawali (crispy pork belly) with tofu, which is one of my favorite panciteria dishes. It has fatty and melt-in-the-mouth pork belly, soft tofu, and a nice tausi (fermented soy bean) flavor.
For beef, we tried their Tenderloin Tips with Onions. It has soft beef and crisp onions, drenched in sweet and savory sauce. And the best thing is that it’s only less than P200!
We also tried their Fried Chicken, which is tender. However, the skin isn’t crisp and its five spice flavor is too strong for me.
Of course, a panciteria visit wouldn’t be complete without ordering Lumpiang Shanghai Frito. It’s crisp, plump, and juicy! However, it’s a tad sweet for me.
For veggies, we got their Chitcharo with Carne Guisado (sautéed snow peas with meat), which has crisp veggies.
If you’re dining solo, you can order their Silver Crown Rice, which rice served with asado (barbecued pork), chicken, fried egg, and veggies. And it’s only P130!
Honestly, most of Silver Crown’s dishes tend to be over-seasoned with Chinese five spice. So if you’re not into such flavor, then you may not enjoy the food of Silver Crown. Anyway…
New Silver Crown Panciteria serves good Filipino-Chinese food in generous amounts. Admittedly, it’s not among the best panciteria for me. But considering its super affordable price, I can’t complain. I recommend it to you!
