Here are the restaurants, bakeries, and food spots you should try in Hong Kong:
Local Food
Australia Dairy Company 澳洲牛奶公司 (Cha Chaan Teng/Hong Kong-Style Cafe)
Literally “tea restaurants”, cha chaan tengs are Hong Kong-style cafes that serve local breakfast classics such as egg tarts, macaroni/spaghetti soup, sandwiches, and the iconic Hong Kong-style milk tea. One of the most popular cha chaan tengs in HK is Australia Dairy Company.
Inside the busy Australia Dairy Company
Australia Dairy Company is known for its scrambled eggs…and its rude service. So is it really that bad? Find it out yourself! LOL.

Hing Kee Restaurant 興記菜館 (Claypot Rice)
Locally known as “Bo Zai Fan”, Claypot Rice is one of the beloved Cantonese dishes you can try in Hong Kong. As its name suggests, this dish is composed of rice, proteins, and other ingredients cooked in a claypot. When done correctly, its rice will have a caramelized bottom, giving a nice crackle and smokiness.
One of the popular claypot rice spots in Hong Kong is Hing Kee Restaurant in Yau Ma Tei (Kowloon) area. This restaurant is so popular that it occupies four shops in the same street!
Hing Kee Restaurant
Our favorites here include their Spare Ribs & Chinese Sausage Claypot Rice and their Deep Fried Oysters Cake.

Lin Heung Lau 蓮香樓 (Dim Sum)
One of the food experiences that you should try in Hong Kong (and it’s almost a crime to miss it) is having Yum Cha (literally “drink tea”) or eating Dim Sum (literally “touches the heart”, it refers to small plates of food). And it’s best to try it in one of the legendary tea houses in HK—Lin Heung Lau.
Lin Heug Lau is best known for serving dim sum in rolling carts or trolleys
Existing for more than a century and surviving a couple of closures, Lin Heung Lau is a dim sum institution in Hong Kong. It is best known for being old school, serving dim sum in rolling carts or trolleys.
Our favorites here include Chicken Feet, Quail Egg Siu Mai (pork and shrimp dumpling), and Steamed Custard Buns.

Oi Man Sang 愛文生 (Dai Pai Dong)
Literally “big license plate stall”, Dai Pai Dong is one of the food experiences every foodie should try in Hong Kong. These are open-air, street side stalls serving Cantonese dishes. We went to a popular one in Sham Shui Po area—Oi Man Sang.
Oi Man Sang
Founded in 1956, Oi Man Sang is one of the oldest dai pai dongs in the city. It has moved indoors and has airconditioning, though its kitchen remains in the street.

Tai On Coffee and Tea Shop 大安茶冰廳 (Modern Cha Chaan Teng)
We visited another cha chaan teng and it leans on the modern side. That cafe is Tai On Coffee and Tea Shop in Yau Ma Tei area.
Inside Tai On Coffee and Tea Shop
Tai On was actually a traditional cha chaan teng established in 1969. Recently, the family who originally owned it had immigrated and wanted to shut it down. But in 2022, Tiffany Yeung took over the business and transformed it into the modern cafe that it is now.
With Tai On being on the modern side, its food is likewise modern and even innovative. For example, they fill the classic Bolo or Pineapple Bun and fills it with duck breast. Or they top another cha chaan tang staple, the Hong Kong-style French Toast, and elevates it with ice cream and other toppings.

Yat Lok Restaurant (MICHELIN-Starred Roast Meats/Goose)
Yat Lok Restaurant is one of two Cantonese meats restaurants awarded with a MICHELIN Star (the other establishment is Kam’s Roast Goose, which I hope to visit someday).
Yat Lok Restaurant
My absolute favorite there (and even in entire Hong Kong) is their Roast Goose, particularly their Whole Goose Leg. It’s so succulent that every time I chew it, it bursts with juices!
Whole Goose Leg
The skin is shimmering, fatty, and has a slight crisp. Dip it in the plum sauce for added sweet and sour flavors, and it’s the perfect bite.

Yuk Kin Fast Food (Fried Rice)
Tucked in a quiet neighborhood in Sheung Wan (Hong Kong Island), Yuk Kin Fast Food spot specializes in fried rice.
Yuk Kin Fast Food
Their fried rice is “affordable” by Hong Kong standards. For as low as HKD54, you can already have a plate of smoky fried rice. The portions are generous, too. One plate can actually feed two people!
We enjoyed their Curry Fried Rice and Black Pepper & Sliced Pork Chop Fried Rice. If you’re ordering them, make sure to add fried egg!

McDonald’s Next (Fanciest McDonald’s in HK)
The McDonald’s at Admiralty Centre, also or formerly known as McDonald’s Next, is the fanciest branch of the American fast food chain in the city. It has an industrial interior, device chargers, and a few items that are exclusive in the branch.

McCafe Items
Pre-pandemic, this branch of McDonald’s was fancier. They plate their food nicely and even provide customers with silverware. They also allow customers to customize their burgers (even add a slice of pineapple to it) and have more “fancy” offerings (like croissant sandwiches). Let’s hope that they will bring it back again!

Kai Kai Dessert 佳佳甜品 (Traditional Cantonese Desserts)
Kai Kai Dessert is a popular shop that serves traditional Cantonese desserts. It’s also a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand awardee, so you know that the food is good.
Kai Kai Dessert
When I say traditional Cantonese desserts, don’t expect cakes or sweet pastries. Rather, these are sweet soups (yes, you read that right), which Kai Kai specializes on.

Mammy Pancake (Egg Waffles)
Egg Waffles is a popular street food in Hong Kong. It’s called that way because of its egg-shaped, bubble-like form. When done right, it's crisp, airy, and simply addictive.
Mammy Pancake in Central Market
One of the popular chains for egg waffles is Mammy Pancake, which has branches across the city. They offer both sweet and savory flavors.

Tai Cheong Bakery 泰昌餅家 (Egg Tarts and Other Chinese Pastries)
Locally called “daan tat”, Egg Tarts are an iconic pastry in Hong Kong and Southern China. This pastry has an eggy custard and a crumbly crust, and is readily available in cha chaan tengs (Hong Kong-style cafes), dim sum spots, and local bakeries. It also has British origins, drawing inspiration from the Custard Tart.
One of the egg tart institutions in Hong Kong is Tai Cheong Bakery. Established in 1954, Tai Cheong Bakery has been baking egg tarts, Chinese doughnuts, and other pastries.

Vission Bakery (Modern Bakery)
Founded by Winnie Pang of Cookie Vission (I’m not sure why there’s two S in the name), Vission Bakery is an artisanal bakery that went viral because of its Matcha Mochi Danish. It should be easy to find because it’s just located along the famous Mid-Levels Escalator in Central district.
