Banawe Street in Quezon City is where people go when they need car parts. It’s also considered the Chinatown of the city. And like any other Chinatowns, it’s teeming with Chinese restaurants. One of the popular ones is Fong Wei Wu.
Fong Wei Wu
Fong Wei Wu is a Taiwanese restaurant that recently earned a MICHELIN selection. It’s helmed by a female Taiwanese chef who uses Taiwanese condiments to produce authentic flavors.
Inside Fong Wei Wu. I like that it’s clean and tidy compared to other Chinese restaurants; no offense meant.

The restaurant is also a “turo-turo” (literally “point point”), which is a nod to how customers order food—by pointing to the Taiwanese dishes of their choice. But don’t expect carinderia (eatery) prices because the dishes are quite pricey. So the question is: Are the dishes worth its price?

Here are the items we’ve tried so far:
Adobo Egg: The egg is braised in soy sauce. It also has a creamy yolk and silky white.
Adobo Egg
Cailan (Chinese broccoli/kale): The vegetables are crisp and also has veggie meat.
Cailan
Hongma: This braised pork dish is like the Filipino adobo but with five spice flavors. It has tender meat, nice fat, and savory sauce.
Hongma (sold by the kilo)
Orange Chicken: It’s sour and a bit sweet. Unfortunately, the breading is soggy, leaving an unpleasant mouthfeel. Skip this one.
Orange Chicken
Salted Crispy Chicken: The chicken is crunchy and juicy.

Tausi (fermented black beans) Spareribs: This has huge chunks of pork that are tender and not overcooked. It also has a nice flavor, and is one of the best versions I’ve had.

So are the dishes worth its price? I don’t think so. While most of the dishes are good, I find it expensive and small-portioned. So I would want to visit Fong Wei Wu one more time to try more dishes, such as their bestselling Pork Chop Fried Rice. Until then, I will have to delay my conclusion.
