Chunook’s Kitchen: This Carinderia (Eatery) in Grace Park (Caloocan City) Serves More Than Twenty Dishes Per Day
A few years ago, I visited a Chinese-Filipino carinderia (eatery) in Grace Park (Caloocan City) called Tony’s Restaurant (check my review here). Serving dishes that you won’t normally see in a carinderia, it’s one of the best ones I’ve ever tried!
But Grace Park isn’t just home to one amazing carinderia but two (that I know of). The other one is Chunook’s Kitchen.

Chunook’s Kitchen is a second generation carinderia owned and operated by Mariel Barcelo (she is also the mother of the real-life couple and food content creator Kath and Gene). They serve more than thirty dishes a day!
The carinderia is so successful that they now have a large dining area.

But the truest testament to their success is the fact that they have a claw machine! LOL.

Here are the food I’ve tried so far:
Kare-Kare (beef and cow innards in peanut stew): The peanut stew is on the savory side and has no sweetness at all, which I like. And I also like that they still serve the traditional version of this dish, with beef, oxtail, skin, and tripe.

Lechon Paksiw (deep-fried pork belly in liver sauce): It’s sweet and has a nice liver sauce flavor. Just beware of the bones.

Pancit Miki (stir-fried thick egg noodles): This has soft noodled with a bit of a chew. It’d also on the savory side.

Sinigang na Pink Salmon (Ulo) sa Miso (pink salmon head in sour soup): The broth is salty, sour, and gingery. The meat on the fish head is rich.

Sweet and Sour Meat Balls: It tastes like a charred sweet longganisa (Filipino sausage). It also has a mushy filling. You can skip this one.

From the few dishes I tried, I could tell that Chunook’s Kitchen is a good carinderia. They make good Filipino food. I hope to return someday and try more dishes (and I will update this article when I do). Anyway, I highly recommend Chunook’s Kitchen to you.
